While this matter is subject to some differences in understanding, the overwhelming majority of organization, scholars, and the Muslim community do pray to the Northeast from North America. The common misunderstanding of praying to the Southeast is based on the use of a map, which projects the earth onto a flat surface while the earth is not flat. The full description of this is technically specialized, and requires an understanding of spherical geometry to fully analyze. However, you can also notice that airplanes that depart from North America, taking the shorter route to Makkah, depart to the Northeast and not to Southeast. Further, the difference is much less in lands closer to Makkah such as Egypt.
