What are the days of voluntary fasting?

  • Fasting every other day.
  • Fasting three days of each month, preferably the three white days (full moon days) which are the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month.
  • Fasting Mondays and Thursdays of every week.
  • Fasting six days in Shawwal.
  • Fasting Day of Arafat for those not performing Hajj.
  • Fasting the eight days of Dhul-Hijjah before Day of Arafat (for the pilgrims and others).
  • Fasting Ashura’ (10th of Muharram) and the day before it.
  • Fasting the four sacred months: Rajab, which stands alone, and the three others, which are consecutive: Duhl-Qi’dah, Duhl-Hijjah, and Muharram (months 11, 12, and 1 respectively). These are the best months to fast outside of Ramadan.
  • Fasting Sha’ban.
