It is not permissible for i’tikaf to be a reason and a way to miss other duties, for although the i’tikaf is legitimate and desirable, it should not be done at the expense of forsaking family obligations.

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Omar (ra):
Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said: “It is enough for a person to be considered sinful, that he neglects those whom he is responsible to sustain.” [reported by an-Nasa’i]

Ibn ‘Omar (ra) reported:
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. The ruler is a guardian of his subjects, the man is a guardian of his family, the woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husband’s house and his offspring; and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects.” [Bukhari and Muslim]
