– The footwear needs to be free from holes.
Shafa’i and Hanbali – impermissible even if a small hole is present because foot is not fully covered.
Maliki and Hanafi – permissible if only small holes are present.
– Footwear needs to be made of leather.
Maliki – must be leather.
Shafa’i and Hanafi – must be a material that doesn’t allow for penetration of water to the skin.
Hanbali – no material requirement as long as the socks are thick and allow for extensive walking without tearing.
