The wife is still considered to be his wife during the waiting period (i’dah) which is 3 menstrual cycles. The couple should still stay together in the same house and she does not have to wear her Hijab in front of him. Allah meant it that way so they can miss each other and reconsider, reconcile, and go back to each other within the 3 menstrual cycles waiting period. The final talaq that separates the couple from each other happens when the husband does not bring back his wife within the i’dah period. In surah Baqarah, verse 228, Allah swt says what could be translated as: (… And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation … ) The husband is entitled to bring his wife back because he is the one initiated the divorce and he is entitled to bring her back only if he intends to treat her well and intends to make it a loving marriage relationship giving each other their rights as Allah swt indicated in the rest of the same verse mentioned above. The husband is not allowed to bring his wife back just to make it difficult on her again and not allow her to move on with her life. Allah swt said in Surah Baqara, verse 231, what could be translated as: (… And when you have divorced women and they have fulfilled the term of their prescribed period, either take them back on reasonable basis or set them free on reasonable basis. But do not take them back to hurt them, and whoever does that, then he has wronged himself … )
