When Eid coincides with Friday, there are three opinions among scholars regarding this matter:
1. It is obligatory to pray the Friday congregational prayer for those who witness the Eid prayer, just as the other Friday prayers are as indicated by general statements and proofs affirming its obligation. This is the majority opinion.
2. The obligation of the Friday prayer is waived for those who are from distant districts, as evidenced by the fact that ‘Uthmân ibn ‘Affân exempted them from the Friday prayer when he led them in Eid prayer.
3. The third opinion is that the obligation of the Friday prayer is waived for those who witness the Eid prayer. However, it is still the responsibility of the Imam to establish the Friday congregational prayer for those who wish to attend it and those who have not witnessed the Eid prayer.
