MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE ISLAMIC ASSOCIATION OF RALEIGH

The Islamic Association of Raleigh (IAR) condemns the terrorist attack on the two mosques in Christchurch, NZ, and extends its prayers and support to the victims. During such difficult times, the IAR reminds its members and the broader community that Muslims make up the largest number of victims of terrorist attacks globally. Therefore, Muslims and people of conscience everywhere must remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect their families and communities.

IAR is committed to the safety of our community members and we are busy reviewing all current security procedures and adding additional security measures so our community can pray and gather without fear. Additionally, we encourage our community members to reach out to our counseling services should they need additional support.

These incidents should strengthen a Muslim’s connection to the mosque, which is traditionally the center of the community and a place for healing. It is precisely moments like this where our faith and our commitment to its tenets of respect, honor and peaceful engagement are necessary.

Finally, we are deeply concerned, as it has been reported that these attacks were inspired by the continuing anti-Muslim and white nationalist rhetoric that has now come out of the fringes and into accepted discourse around the world.

The Islamic Association of Raleigh invites all Muslims and people of faith and respect to participate in or observe worship at its facility.

May God bring faith and healing to victims of terrorism everywhere.
