Should the niṣāb for money be calculated separately from gold and jewelry? For example, if someone has $100,000 in cash but only 5 grams of gold, should zakāt be paid only on the money since the gold is below its niṣāb, or should the gold and money be combined and zakāt paid on the total?
My wife received a significant amount of gold jewelry during our wedding, totaling about 277 grams. It was given as personal jewelry, not as an investment or for trade. However, because some of the pieces are extravagant, she cannot wear them regularly and may wear them rarely, perhaps once a year. I understand that the majority of scholars do not require zakāt on personal jewelry worn by women, but some sources say zakāt becomes due if the amount is considered excessive. Would this amount be considered “excess” according to the majority of scholars, and would zakāt then be required?
My father passed away three years ago, and the financial responsibility of the household has fallen upon me and my brother. My family is asking me to take an interest-based loan to pay for my younger sister’s college tuition, even though I cannot afford it and I am still recovering financially. Is it permissible for them to ask me to take a loan with ribā? Is it fair for them to demand more than I can handle? Is it permissible to buy a house through ribā when renting is possible? And is it permissible for my brother to manage a gas station where alcohol is sold?
My husband has been going through some financial difficulties, and I find myself feeling upset or jealous when I see others affording things that we cannot. I always say “Mā shā’ Allāh” and make du‘ā’ for my husband’s rizq, but I still worry that I may be causing ḥasad (envy). What should I do?
