Shahadah: The testification

Shahadah is the Islamic declaration of faith and the first of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a fundamental tenet of the Islamic faith and serves as a declaration of monotheism. The Shahada is the testimony that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.

The Arabic phrase for the Shahada is: “La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur rasulullah.”

Translation:

  • “La ilaha illallah” means “There is no god but Allah.”
  • “Muhammadur rasulullah” means “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.”

By uttering the Shahada sincerely and with conviction, a person formally converts to Islam. This declaration of faith is considered the foundation of Islamic belief, emphasizing the oneness of God and the prophethood of Muhammad. Muslims recite the Shahada in various contexts, including during their prayers and in moments of personal affirmation of their faith.
