TIC EID STATEMENT ON ONGOING WAR IN GAZA

RALEIGH NC • April 9 2024

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, The most Merciful.

As local Muslim leaders representing the voices of over 30,000 community members in and around the Triangle region of North Carolina, the Triangle Imams’ Council remains steadfast in our condemnation of the indiscriminate Israeli attacks on civilians; the destruction of homes, houses of worship, hospitals, and schools; and the violation of human rights and international law in killing aid workers and journalists that persist in Gaza and other affected regions.

This war has seen the killing of over 30,000 innocent people in Gaza, the majority of whom are children and women; the injuries and mutilation of 70,000; and the internal displacement of over 2,000,000 people. Additionally, Israel has blockaded and prevented humanitarian aid from reaching those desperate for food and medical supplies. We call for an immediate end to this suffering and bloodshed, a permanent ceasefire, the opening of pathways to providing humanitarian aid, and an end to the unjust and inhumane 16-year-long siege of Gaza.

We plead with our local members of Congress Donald Davis, Deborah Ross, Valerie Foushee, and Wiley Nickel to leverage your influence and voice to halt the United States’ military aid and arms sales contributing to the war. We further implore you to call for Israel to abide by the UN Security Council’s Resolution calling for a ceasefire and for the expansion of the flow of humanitarian aid to the region. We call for your support in advocating for a permanent ceasefire and for backing diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.

In addition, incidents of hate, discrimination, and violence against Muslims, Arabs, and Jews continue to increase, reflecting a deeply concerning trend that affects our communities locally and nationally. The pain we feel is a mirror of the broader societal division and the urgent need for dialogue, understanding, and action. We broadly condemn all forms of hate.

Moreover, the 216 percent surge in reported incidents of bias against Muslims and Arabs in this country since October 7th underscores the critical need for legislative and societal action against Islamophobia and anti-Arab bias and all forms of religious discrimination and persecution. We urge our members of Congress to address these issues head-on, advocating for policies that foster tolerance and coexistence.

The Triangle Imams’ Council remains committed to the values of peace, justice, human dignity, and coexistence among all people, regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or nationality. We pray for an end to the war, an end to the illegal occupation, and for the restoration of security and stability in the region. We also pray for an end to bias and discrimination against all people in this country. We are hopeful for a future where all can live and thrive in harmony throughout the world. Ameen.
