The Friday Night Program between Maghrib & Isha for October 12 features a talk by Dr Basit Bilal Koshal on the topic of "A Historical and Philosophical Critique of New Atheism".
Dr Koshal will also deliver the second shift Khutbah at IAR and the third shift Khutbah at ICM on the topic of Iman and Contentment of the Heart.
"New Atheism" has been a hot topic of discussion in recent years. These lectures critically examine the foundational claims of this school of thought from the perspective of history and philosophy. We look at examples from the history of science to challenge the distinction between faith and rationality, examples from the philosophy of science to challenge the distinction between myth and reason, and finally the use of science to build a metaphysics to replace religion.
Dr Basit Koshul received his first PhD in 2003 from Drew University, specializing in the sociology of religion. He completed his second PhD in 2011 from the University of Virginia. He joined the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law at LUMS in 2006. His areas of interests include the relationship between religion and modernity, philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, the sociology of culture and the contemporary Islam-West encounter. He has a number of publications to his credit including books that he has written and co-edited.
